A family pet rottweiler dog has attacked a five-year-old girl and her mother west of Melbourne, causing serious injuries.

The girl and her mother were taken by ambulance to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital where the girl was due to undergo surgery.

The girl received serious injuries to her arms, legs and face after being mauled at about 10.30am (AEST) in her backyard near Melton, about 50km west of Melbourne, Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokeswoman Christine Paterson said.

Ms Paterson said the injuries were not life-threatening.

"The girl was in the backyard when the dog attacked her, mum fought the dog off with a stick and the dog then turned and attacked her," she said.

The mother suffered injuries to her arm, which were treated at the same hospital, after she refused to be separated from her daughter to travel to an adult hospital.

The dog has been impounded by Melton Shire Council while its fate is discussed.

The ambulance service later confirmed the girl's mother is eight months pregnant.

The woman had apparently told the council the dog had no previous history of aggression.
