I mentioned in the SR3 thread that I was going to be playing hot potato with cube's innards. Well, the replacement chassis came today and I spent the night switching around the components.

    What's new:
    • ATX Tower Chassis
    • 3x 140mm fans
    • 3x 120mm fans
    • 3x 120mm filters
    • 1x 140mm filter
    • 1x AMD AM2+ heatsink
    • 6 channel fan slider panel
    What's old:
    • Everything else
Basic parts list and original pictures can be found in cube's thread.

    Pictures of the final result:

    What's going on:
    Fans - Exhaust

    • 2x 140mm top
    • 1x 120mm rear
    Fans - Intake (filtered)

    • 2x 120mm front
    • 1x 120mm bottom
    • 1x 140mm side
There are seven fans in total, six are controlled using a slider panel in the front of the case, the side fan is connected directly to the motherboard and is the "chassis" fan. The case came with a single 120mm rear fan.

I'm happy I chose white. It's a much needed change over black everything and worked out extremely well since most of the components are black. The PSU is now bottom-mounted. 90% of the cabling is now hidden as the case has a secret area behind the opposite side panel specifically for this purpose.

    Cube is now looking sad.

I'll probably end up tossing an old atom board in cube eventually. It won't go to waste. :)

If the title wasn't clear, the machine has now been renamed "Illest". The chassis model is "Source". Illest (Source). The manufacturer is NZXT, I would highly recommend them, for it's price plus 20% off it's a complete steal, it's absolutely beautiful and exceptional quality. There are two separate Souce chassis, classic and elite. I chose classic. The only difference was the elite included an extra fan and toolless bays.

I'm sure your favorite foot rest will return in the form of another cool machine :)

    It definitely will.

It's a good little case, just not really meant for a 1st gen phenom + dedicated graphics.

I can probably see it returning as a file server (3TB x 2 raid 1).

    Wasn't looking for a response. :D

Since I mentioned it, figured I would post it. ;)

Yeah, the pictures are nasty, one of these days I need to really look into replacing the battery on my actual camera.

Going to upgrade the BIOS tomorrow so that I have the ability to use AM3 processors as part of the next future upgrade.

    Further planned upgrades to illest:
    * Upgrade processor to AM3 Phenom II (Sooner)
    * Upgrade to a pair of modern disks and use Win7's mirroring (later) **
    * Upgrade the GTS450 to a GTX5xx (much later)

** Use CloneZilla to clone the current primary disk, remove it, add the newly cloned disk and identical unallocated disk. Next use Win7 Pro's disk management to mirror the new primary drive to the unallocated drive. Poor man's RAID1. :)

Heard that Windows' mirroring is nothing short of crappy. (it's better than running a single disk IMO)

Proof of concept, since there's a lot of misinformation floating around on the internet:

    Re: Illest (Source)

Once both mirrors sync, this is what your boot menu will look like:

    screenshot.509.png

Obviously, "Secondary Plex" is the special ticket. This will allow the system to boot if the mirror degrades.

Let's simulate a failure of a disk. I remove a disk from the virtual machine and on boot, I select "Secondary Plex" to boot. Boot is successful and now our mirror is reported as degraded:

    screenshot.510.png

This will work fine. Just basic redundancy. :)

    Simple, no?

    Re: Illest (Source)

During my toying, I decided to give my disk a check-up.

I couldn't believe it's already 5 years old and has over 17K power-on hours. Since I couldn't afford getting two new disks at this time, I ended up getting a used disk to use as a mirror, same model as the current, just 4 years old so it's a little younger. I hadn't realized just how long I've had this disk. Now with illest, it's three generations old.

Hitachi made good disks, too bad they sold out to WDC...

    Re: Workstation Upgrade "illest"

So apparently the CPU fan header on my board can support 8.88w / 750mA. I plan on fully exploiting this.

    OH MY GOODNESS!

For the first time ever, my processor has a higher rating than my graphics card.

    screenshot.512.png

    Latest upgrade:

    • AMD Phenom II X4 B97 (Business Class) overclocked to 3.42GHz (7%)
    • Cooler Master Hyper 212+ (MEGAHALEM)
    • Additional 120mm fan for the megahalem
    • Second identical hårdiskar (for mirroring)

Holy shit, I didn't think the side panel was going to fit. It almost didn't thanks to my hardheadedness in wanting to add the silencer layer to the panel. I did manage to get it on with minimal hassle though. I tell you though, my old board still has it! Running a new CPU (AM3) and even overclocking it, not to mention that asinine heatsink.

And yeah, I have both 120mm fans running off of the single CPU fan header. It's literally just under it's max limit.

    Re: Workstation Upgrade "illest"

New disk worked perfectly. Even though I had reservations on intentionally buying a 4 year old HDD, I'm happy I got an identical copy. Even the firmware is a match. :)

    Mirror is built. Yay fault-tolerance.

I don't see how it can recover an error. Mask them, yes, but not recover.

I'll have to watch the video later. :)
