    Ripto 5120 Build Log

Originally mentioned here, I need a firewall/vpn. The original plan was to build one out of new parts, due to stuff, I've decided to repurpose used parts. I'm beginning to be happy about reusing old parts, they still work so it's good not to waste. I'll update the thread as it progresses.

    Original thread: https://www.beercandle.com/showthread.php?t=27211&p=162194&viewfull=1#post162194

The motherboard is an old LGA 775 socket type. It was originally used in an old CCTV DVR so at least I know it can process large, continuous amounts of data without issue. Model is X7SLM-L.

Dove down to the archive and retrieved the guts..

Processor is Celeron E1400. Nice little dual-core workhorse. I don't remember what the RAM is.. I know it's Kingston, but I had removed the labels because they're honestly dust traps and can seriously mess with the ventilation.

And that's as far as my hardware recycling goes. Everything else will be purchased new or used. Saved a good bit of change doing it this way. :)

Package from New Egypt! Wonder what it could be... Possibly a NIC?

    0530121026.jpg 0530121028.jpg 0530121029.jpg

    It's officially an NC360T off a ProLiant server, but it's just a rebranded Intel® EXPI9402PT.

Considering HP wants $230 and NewEgg wants $160, I think I did good considering I got it for $30. :D

Hey hey, the chassis came today from California!

    0531121820.jpg

Just a little baby thing. :D

    0531121821.jpg 0531121822.jpg 0531121826.jpg

Unwrap it and remove it's rack ears. They are meant to be removed and are held on by 3 phillips head.

With the ears removed, it resembles a Cisco unit. A lot. Fun. :)

    0531121826a.jpg

This is where it will sit, on top of the Geneva 5600. Aside from being a *lot* smaller, it's also has a bit less width, which is odd since it is a rackmount unit.

    0531121828.jpg 0531121832.jpg 0531121833.jpg

Sitting the motherboard inside. Perfect fit (it's uATX). An added bonus is that the CPU is *perfectly* aligned with the blower.

    0531121835.jpg 0531121836.jpg

Added the network card so I can get an idea of the end result. I was initially worried because the heatsink on the NIC's processor is dead-center with one of the PCI slots, but happily it's an absolute perfect fit, no clearance issues.

As you can see, there's quite the sized gap to get from the card to the PCIE slot. This is where the riser extender I ordered will come in.

    0531121842.jpg

Cover back on, this is what the end result will look like. :)

Right now the only thing I'm waiting on are the riser and extender which are coming from China and probably will be another two weeks, so this will be my last entry until then.

I have a HDD (WD Blue) and a heatsink already that I'm ... repurposing ... but I'm debating on just getting a new heatsink since they're cheap enough and it's an important component.

    Re: Ripto 5120 Build Log

It was staring at me.. begging me to touch it, so I touched it.

    0601121547.jpg

I installed the motherboard pegs and the sheet that prevents short-circuits.

    0601121548.jpg

    Installed my repurposed WD Blue.

    0601121548b.jpg 0601121551.jpg

And my favorite part: Added some rubber feet to the bottom so that it stays in place and also raises it 0.06" off the ground.

    Re: Ripto 5120 Build Log

The heatsink came today and so did the PCIE extender things.

The heatsink is super nice, very heavy and high quality.

    0605121753.jpg

Installed it in the motherboard and then installed the motherboard itself.

    0605121903.jpg 0605121904.jpg

I powered it on and it booted right up. Holy fuck though, the blower is retardedly loud. I'm serious too, it can wake the dead.. but it pushes a lot of air and that's all that matters. :)

    ...

I'm not happy with the quality of the extenders. I do not trust them. I will just count the $10 spent as a loss and get a ribbon cable despite my original reservations.

Hay, the ribbon came. Quite long, but, I squished it in there and it appears to work OK.

I don't know how much latency it introduced, but it does work. After I install a OS I'll test it further.

It's quite long at 19cm, so I really had to smush it.

    Re: Ripto 5120 Build Log

Just a note, this thread is interesting, although it is a little over my head ... I'm hoping to start brushing up on my hardware knowledge. I want to build a home PC for a start. I forgot i have a registered company, so i can buy from the mass distributors instead of the store. This occurred to me yesterday on my way to lunch ....

I'm Itching to build an epic server.. I need to start putting parts together for it.. I want to build a large file server, at least 4TB I might even set it up as a home entertainment server or something and put all my Movies and music on it. set it up to run off the TV and get rid of my DVD player.

In IT Speak.. if it was upgraded and removed... It's going to sit in a dark corner of a storage shelf and collect dust. therefore "Throw Away"

AFRO: You goung to use that 500 gig hard drive..

    IT Dork: no

    AFRO: can I "borrow it"

    IT DORK: Ya sure
